BYU’s men’s basketball got a combined 54 points from Elijah Bryant and Yoeli Childs as they defeated the Pacific Tigers 80-65 in West Coast Conference action on Saturday night. Bryant missed only one field goal attempt in the game, finishing eight of nine from the field, including a perfect four-for-four from the three point line. He added seven rebounds and four assists in the win. Childs came off the bench to play 33 minutes in the game which was more that Dave Rose said he had planned to play the star big man due to his being sick earlier in the week and not practicing.
Rose said after the game that he was proud of his team for being able to adjust their gameplan to combat the Tigers’ schemes on defense, including using a zone defense at points in the game. The game got chippy down the stretch with a number of foul calls late in the game and it appeared that Rose and Pacific coach Damon Stoudamire had a conversation late in the game about the matter. When asked what was said, Rose explained he was trying to figure out why the game had gotten so physical. Rose added that Stoudamire had let him know his thoughts on the matter and when asked what Stoudamire’s thoughts were, Rose laughed and said to “go ask Damon.”
With the victory BYU improves to 18-5 on the season, and 7-3 in WCC play. The Cougars will head out on the road neext weekend with games at Loyola Marymount in Los Angeles, CA on Thursday before facing WCC Goliath Gonzaga on Saturday night in Spokane, WA.
At halftime, hip-hop duo Ayo & Teo performed for the crowd. Their song “Rolex” became viral internet sensation during football season after a video of the Cougarettes and BYU mascot Cosmo the Cougar doing a choreographed dance to the song was shared thousands of times on social media. Here’s a video of a portion of their performance this evening:
